Hotel prices in the UK fell by 13% last year, plummeting costs across the country to their lowest levels for six years. Britain, which three years ago boasted of the most expensive hotel rooms of any European country, has now slipped to thirteenth place in the league table of European nations.
The statistics, which were recorded by the Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI®), show a large drop from 2008 prices. On average, Britons paid £84 for a room across the country in 2009, down from £97 per night the previous year. However, this news was positive for foreign visitors.
The weakness of the Pound combined with lower room rates meant that the average prices paid by
European and US travellers were down by as much as 32% in some British cities. David Roche, President of Hotels.com, said: “Step inside the time machine, turn the dial back to 2003, and compare hotel prices then and now.
What’s changed? Not much.
Our latest Hotel Price Index, covering all of 2009, shows that prices fell globally by 14% on already weak 2008 figures, bringing consumer prices back to levels not seen since 2003.” He added that despite some signs of hotel price recovery, promotions across the UK are set to continue this year.

1. Book online.

As almost everything is electronic including tickets, itineraries and car vouchers, there’s a lot less wasted paper. Print only the items that you require.

2. Currency exchange tips. Currency commission rates are fairly consistent from vendor to vendor, with a cash passport – prepaid card, the company nominates the amount to be loaded on the card to be used by the travelling employee. It is safe and convenient. You can view and print out a transaction list to keep accountability easy and straightforward. The card can be purchased in all the major currencies and used as a merchant facility or Eftpos, with cash withdrawal via any ATM.

3. Review your class of travel policy. Be aware of the differences in the various fare class policies. The range of fare options generally increase the further back on the plane you go so, by opting for a more cost effective but slightly less convenient option, you will be able to maintain your schedule of client visits as well as travel more often than your previous class policy – keeping your client contacts healthy and within budget!

4. Be aware of baggage allowance. Carriers have different allowances for checked and carry-on luggage as well as for different classes so before you travel, we can advise you on allowance to prevent being charged for excess baggage.

5. Be sure the trip is necessary before booking. Booking costs and especially cancellation fees can be significant, so ask yourself ‘Do I really need to make this trip?’ before you book. Booking in advance can save costs too.

6. Stay in a nearby hotel. There are several benefits to staying in a hotel in close proximity to where you’re doing business.
• You can sleep in longer!
• You may be able to take advantage of the corporate rate of the company you are visiting.
• If you have a regular corporate account, you might be upgraded at no extra charge
• You have the option to invite the client to breakfast rather than an expensive dinner!
• You could walk to the office or if the hotel provides it, take advantage of the free local business park shuttle service.

7. Meals. Do you really need 3 courses? Unless you’re entertaining, do what you would do at home. Also, check the menu for service charges as some bills don’t itemize them. Leave a tip only if a service charge is not included. Before eating at a restaurant, review the room service menu as it is often cheaper to eat in your room. Discourage room service for other incidental items as these will incur an additional charge. Finally, whether it’s a meal on the plane or a complimentary breakfast at the hotel, take advantage of these ‘free’ meals. If you’ve been invited out as a business guest, why not go!

8. Hire a car. We check all the available rates for you before you book, hiring a car locally may be more cost effective than you think, especially if you’re staying for a long period of time and your hotel offers free parking. Remember to optimise the available car deals and save on taxi fares.

Dressing up or down

Clearly misunderstood by first time cruise passengers is the expected dress code on board.

Cruise ships usually have three dress codes whilst on board and these generally refer to what is expected whilst dining each evening.

The ships daily news will remind guests what the dress code is for the night ahead - formal, informal or casual.

As a guide for formal nights, like it or not getting dressed up really is part of the tradition of cruising.

The true definition of formal is black tie. Some cruise lines will accept a jacket and tie but it is important that your travel agent checks with the particular cruise line you are booking with before you pay your deposit. Most ships offer some form of hire facility on board and can assist if items such as cuff links are forgotten!
Depending on the cruise duration one or two formal nights per week on board is normal.

Informal in most instances means jacket and tie for gentleman and a cocktail dress for the ladies however on some lines informal can be “smart casual” where pants and a collared shirt (polo’s OK) will suffice for the gents and dresses for the ladies.

When referring to a casual dress code this is mostly for daytime wear around the ship where around the pool bathing suits are the right option (for most) but ensure that if going into a dining area footwear is worn along with something to cover the swimmers.

And the last option of course is room service and once the cabin steward has delivered your food and drink – well, anything goes!!

Fantasia calls on fantastic Tunis port

MSC Fantasia made its maiden call last week at the new wharf in the spectacular port of
Tunis in Tunisia. The first stretch of the quayside had just been opened the same day the 3,900-passenger ship docked.

The wharf is currently 320 metres long but will be doubled in length by 2010, allowing two ships of Fantasia’s class to moor there simultaneously.
When completed, the Fantasia calls on fantastic Tunis port new quayside and terminal will house a recreation complex, designed in the style of a traditional Tunis neighborhood, and tipped to be one of world’s most beautiful terminals.

Eight of the ships in MSC Cruises fleet will use the new wharf during 2009, with MSC
Fantasia, MSC Splendida, MSC Sinfonia and MSC Melody calling at Tunis every week for
the rest of the year.
